Shashi Tharoor and Dark Era of Inglourious Empire.

Shashi Tharoor and Dark Era of Inglourious Empire.

   Hello readers,

The task given by Dilip Barba sir  and look's a brief introduction about Shashi Tharoor.

An author, politician, and former international civil servant, Shashi Tharoor straddles several worlds of experience. Currently a third-term Lok Sabha MP representing the Thiruvananthapuram constituency and Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs, he has previously served as Minister of State for Human Resource Development and Minister of State for External Affairs in the Government of India. During his nearly three-decade long prior career at the United Nations, he served as a peacekeeper, refugee worker, and administrator at the highest levels, serving as Under-Secretary General during Kofi Annan's leadership of the organisation.

In  writing this book, it is obvious that instead of being even-handed, Tharoor has chosen to present the arguments against British rule in India with strength and force, and he is right in doing so. Until An Era of Darkness came along, there was no single work that clearly and unambiguously catalogued all the harm done to India under British rule.

Post-colonialism is simply a lens through which we study literature that is set in colonized countries or deals with post-colonial issues. ... This novel addresses the cultural and religious struggles that Nigerians faced following British colonization.

the beginnings of British colonialism in the South Asian subcontinent. Tharoor identified the timing of Britain’s arrival in India as crucial to the successful establishment of the Raj and then went on to elucidate the early phase of economic exploitation. The British not only raised tariffs on Indian cloth but literally chopped off the thumbs of weavers as a means of destroying the Indian textile industry. Before British rule, Tharoor argued, the subcontinent had a thriving economy based on the production of high-quality textiles that were sought after by the Roman Empire, durable wooden ships that lasted over three times longer than British ships, and an innovative method of steelmaking. Tharoor’s clinching argument was that prior to 200 years of colonial exploitation, India had 23 per cent of global GDP, but in 1947 it was one of the poorest countries in the world. To put it plainly, the British impoverished India.

the policy or practice of acquiring full or partial political control over another country, occupying it with settlers, and exploiting it economically.

A great racial divide emerged between Indians and the class-conscious Britons. The divide lasted until the end of the British Raj in 1947, long after Queen Victoria's passing. So if the movie makes her out to be a champion against racial intolerance, it can certainly be argued that she didn't do enough to improve racial equality outside the palace walls.
